The Inca Trail approximately 40,000 kilometers of trails built over the Andes running from the southern of Colombia passing the jungles and mountains of Ecuador, and as well astonishment trails over the highlands of Bolivia and Perú then connecting whit the desert areas of northern and central Chile and to the northwest part of Argentina. The classic Inca Trail trek starts in the Andean region going through the mountains, where we have original sections of Inca trails, Incan tunnels, as well going through the cloud forest. Without doubt is the best opportunity to go back to 16° century and live whit the Incas for 4 unforgettable days.
Cusco/Inca Trail: Wiñayhuayna – Sungate – Machupicchu
We start very early morning (4:30 am) in order to avoid crowds and enjoy in a better way the beauty of the Inca trail!
We will meet and pick you up from your hotel at 4/4:30 am. (time to be confirmed at the briefing time) and travel by bus to Piskacucho which is called ‘kilometer 82’ where the trail starts. There will be a breakfast stop in Ollantaytambo (6:30-7am.) to load up on energy (breakfast is included), even here you can buy extra snacks, batteries, etc.
Upon arrival at kilometer 82 (8:30am.), we will have some time to organize ourselves (using the restrooms, applying sunscreen on, insect repellent, and more) then will go toward the control point. and it will be necessary to show your entrance tickets, passports and (if paying a student rate) the student card.
To start the trail (2,720m./8,923ft.) we cross the Vilcanota River and follow its route toward the east. The first day is relatively easy (a warm-up along the Incan flat terrain) and after 3 h. will have great views of an incredible Incan site officially called ‘Patallacta’, the Urubamba mountain range divides the jungle, the Andes and right here the view of a beautiful snowcapped peak of ‘W’akay Willca’ known as Veronica. Now after an hour and half, lunch time.
Our first campsite Ayapata will be after 2 h. from lunch spot this path will be through the small village of Wayllabamba (3, 300m.) in the green valley of the same name. the average time to reach is 5pm. Once there we will have a relax time. Around 6 pm. we will have the tea time, (hot drinks options and snacks.), then 7 pm. Dinner time. With more surprises made by your chef.
Very early morning around 5 am. depending of your guide, you will be awakened with a cup of hot coca tea, then again this morning our chef will surprise us with a fabulous breakfast to get energy for this long and really beautiful day. We will start a steep up ascent for along 4 h. towards the highest pass in whole entire trek, Abra Warmihuañusca or ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ at 4,200m./13,779ft. Once here a resting time and as well time to enjoy the fascinating views. After we begin the descent along the green valley to our lunch stop which is known as ‘Pacaymayu’ 3,550m./11,600ft. (average time to reach here 2h.).
Are 2 more hours up to the second pass, on the way we will see one small Inca site ‘Runkuracay’, then continuing until the top we will be able to enjoy the Vilcabamba mountain range, then descending 1 hour we will explore the astonishment ‘Sayacmarca’ (Incan site). Still 30 more minutes to reach to the second campsite (average time 5:00 pm.) lots of hummingbirds and another birds, incredible variety of native plants and trees such as the ´Polylepis´ or Q’ueuña which grow in the astonishing cloud forest located at 3,650m./11,972ft. As well at night after dinner still the option to enjoy the fascinating Inca constellations in the southern hemisphere sky.
This day we will wake up around 6 am. as every day warm water to wash our face will be set next to our tent, time to organize ourselves then breakfast. After we start our third journey, the first 2 h. (Andean flat terrain) will be 90% original Inca trail with a spectacular views of the mountain ranges, a lot of flora and fauna typical of the cloud forest as well here we will understand why this Trek is one of the most famous treks in the world.
our next point is third pass of Phuyupatamarca, great views of the mountains, snowcapped peaks. the Incan site of ‘Phuyupatamarca’ is located a few minutes of walking from the third pass and after visiting this, we continue walking dawn (almost 2½ h.) through the cloud forest until the agricultural Incan site of ‘Inti pata’ still 30 minutes until we arrive at our third campsite Wiñaywayna (2650m./8700ft.), here we will reach around 1 pm. For lunch. Today we will only walk about 5 hours.
After lunch a short break, around 4 pm. we will go to ‘Wiñaywayna’ Incan site (20 minutes round trip) a short explanation about this place, and then time to explore!
We like to enjoy our last feast with the porters, chefs, and guides as a real family. That is why we will continue with an Inca Trail tradition to organize a ceremony in the evening to introduce the team to the tourists once again and to thank them for the great job done (if you wish to provide tips for them then you can do so at this time). It is advisable to go to bed at a reasonable time due to next morning we will wake up very early, and as every day ‘positive mind’ for a great day, as we know Machupicchu waiting for us!!!
Today we wake up at 3:30 am. The breakfast will be at 4:00 am. Is moment to say goodbye to our team of porters, also to our chef.
Then we will walk 10 minutes until the checkpoint and wait there until 5:30 am. when it opens, it is an hour trek along the flat terrain until ‘Sun gate'(2,720m./8,923ft.) where we will have the first views of Machupicchu. then 1 hour left downstairs, once we are descending the views will be getting better with the magnificent view of the lost city of the Incas in all its glory. Around 7:45 am. we are at Machupicchu checkpoint so then, time to explore Machupicchu! 2 hours a private guided tour. Make sure to organize with your guide a time to explore Machupicchu on your own, or otherwise to climb Machupicchu mountain or Waynapicchu mountain (must be arranged ahead of time). Your guide will hand out your bus ticket to Aguas Calientes village which is 30 minutes from Machupicchu as well he will offer you to meet you there to enjoy the last lunch together in a local restaurant, this is optional due to is not included (if you want to skip it please let him know to organize your train ticket).
From any place you are in Aguas Calientes to reach to the train station is only 10 minutes, make sure you are on the platform at least 30 minutes before the departure time*. By train is 2 hours until Ollantaytambo, outside of the train station one transfer will be waiting for you and he will take you back to your hotel (wherever it is: Cusco, Sacred valley) in a private bus.
You have to bring with you for this trek.
We recommend a small backpack 30L – 40L for hiking, Big backpack will not be allowed inside Machupicchu. Big ones can be stored outside citadel gate.
We will hand out a duffle bag at your briefing time and of course we will explain you what to put inside. Also include a porter wo will carry up your personal items to 7 kg. or 14 pounds including your sleeping bag and air mattress (these 2 items are 3.5 kg.)
Note: Beside the main briefing done the night before the trek. Your guide will explain you every night about the activities to do and what to bring in your backpacks next days.
